Napolitano deplores violence, prejudice in Ramadan greeting

Rome, August 8 - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano called for an end to religious prejudices and a celebration of freedom Thursday, to mark the end of Ramadan. "Today's celebration is cause for reflection on the historical achievements of our society, such as freedom of worship and the rejection of any form of discrimination and violence based on religious affiliation," the president said in a statement. "Only with determination and courage to safeguard these values, Italy and Europe will be able to build a more open, just and free society". His message came at the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting on the Islamic calendar.
