Nursing home, flats evacuated as Sardinian fires rage

Cagliari, August 8 - A nursing home was evacuated as fires raged in the forests and brush of Sardinia, authorities said Thursday. Volunteers joined firefighters in combating the flames that consumed at least 2,000 hectares of vegetation on the island on Wednesday. A final assessment of the damage had not been made but crews were busy fighting spot fires that continued to break out amid ongoing hot, dry weather. Meteorologists say temperatures have climbed past 40 degrees C on Sardinia, and hot winds have fanned the flames. Laconi, a small town in the centre of the island, came under particular threat and about 40 people were evacuated from their homes as a precaution, However, after spending the night in local schools many returned to their homes Thursday morning. The elderly were also moved out of a nursing home in the nearby village of Su Lau as a precaution. Meanwhile, firefighters used three helicopters and a water bomber on fires that remain active in the area of Sinnai, about 20 kilometres from the city of Cagliari.
