Alfano says PdL MPs ready to defend party's 'ideals and history'

Justice reforms or elections, says Berlusconi

Rome, August 2 - Ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi told his People of Freedom (PdL) party members on Friday that justice reforms must be made or that he would push for a return to elections. Berlusconi maintains he is being persecuted by magistrates after a tax-fraud jail term was upheld by Italy's supreme court Thursday. "We have to ask for elections soon to win. Let's reflect on the best road to take to reach this objective," Berlusconi said. Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said at the meeting that PdL MPs were considering stepping down. "If we have to defend our ideals and history, and those of the president that coincides with ours, we are ready to resign," Alfano said. Before Thursday's decision by Italy's supreme court to uphold a tax-fraud ruling against the ex-premier, some hawks in the PdL had called for party's lawmakers to quit parliament en masse, a move that would sink the government, if the conviction were confirmed.
