Modena immigration centre closed to permit restructuring

(ANSA) – Modena, August 2 – An immigrant identification and expulsion centre (Cie) in the Northern Italian city of Modena currently at the centre of a probe into how it was being run is now being temporarily closed to permit restructuring works. Four of the 23 immigrants that were being held at the Cie unit have been transferred elsewhere in northern Italy ahead of the start of the works. The renovation works are being carried out amid furor over the state of the building that was being managed by the L'Oasi consortium of Siracusa, Sicily. Attention was drawn to living conditions after centre employees who went on strike for six days amid lack of payments and in complaint against the way the inhabitants were forced to live.
