Castellucci, Liddell get top Venice Theatre Festival awards

Venice, August 2 - Italian experimental stage director Romeo Castellucci and Spanish actress and performer Angélica Liddell were awarded top prizes at the latest edition of the 42nd International Theatre Festival in Venice on Friday. Castellucci received the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement, while Liddell was awarded the Silver Lion for Theatrical Innovation. The awards ceremony took place in the ''Sala delle Colonne'' room at Ca'Giustinian, in the heart of historic Venice, where the festival organizer Biennale di Venezia is headquartered. ''The Golden Lion for the lifetime achievement given to Romeo Castellucci originates from a sentiment of gratitude and togetherness towards an artist who is celebrated abroad but considered an uncomfortable talent here in Italy'', said Paolo Baratta, president of the Biennale di Venezia. ''It's a Lion given in the name of Italy''. Castellucci said he was struck by having been awarded the prize, adding that ''it makes one stop and look back''.
