Rome, August 2 - Ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi told his People of Freedom (PdL) party leaders gathered at a meeting on Friday that the tax-fraud sentence against him upheld Thursday by Italy's supreme Court of Cassation was "based on nothing". Berlusconi was greeted by a long applause by PdL lawmakers as he entered the Lower House to discuss the implications of the verdict. "I will remember this applause all of my life," Berlusconi said. Members of Berlusconi's party rallied around the ex-premier after his tax-fraud jail term was upheld by the supreme court Thursday. The ruling means Berlusconi cannot stand in future elections and sooner or later he looks set to be stripped of his status as Senator.
