Italian car sales drop 1.9% in July, dragged down by Fiat

Rome, August 1 - Italian car sales slumped 1.9% in July to 107,514, down from 109,617 in the same month last year, according to data released by Italian Transport Minister on Thursday. Sales in the first seven months of the year dropped 9.3% to 839,481. New car registrations for Fiat, Italy's largest carmaker, slumped 5.3% to 31,377 units in July, down from 33,213 in the same month last year. This compares with a 15.2% drop in June sales. Its sales in the first seven months of the year dropped 10.7% to 244,643 vehicles, down from 10.7% a year ago. Fiat's market share in the period dropped to 29.2% in July compared to 30.3% in the year-earlier month. In June this year, it had a 27.5% share. In the first seven months of the year, Fiat's market share was 29.1%, down from 29.6% in the same period in 2012.
