Congo-born integration minister victim of frequent racist acts

Probes opened into banana throwing incident against Kyenge

Ravenna, August 1 - An investigation has been opened for a banana-throwing incident last week aimed at Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge while she was speaking at a rally in the city of Cervia. Investigators and police are examining videos and questioning audience members to ascertain who the fruit thrower could have been. During the Congo-born minister's speech at a Democratic Party meeting, someone in the audience threw a banana, a likely reference to comments by a Senator from the anti-immigration Northern League, who compared her to an orangutan. That was followed by slurs against Kyenge, some in support of the banana-thrower, posted on the Facebook pages of local politicians in Tuscany and the Veneto region. Italy's first black cabinet member has suffered a barrage of racist epithets since her appointment in April.
