EU Border agency alarmed at migrant arrivals to Italy

Brussels, July 31 - European Union border agency Frontex expressed alarm on Wednesday at a recent wave of migrant arrivals on the southern coast of Italy. "In the last week, 1,300 migrants landed in Sicily and Lampedusa," said Frontex. "It is a worrying signal that requires continuous monitoring". Many migrants fleeing north Africa often arrive by sea at the Port of Lampedusa or in Sicily, their first European ports of call. But the crossing is dangerous and many drownings are reported. Earlier this month, Pope Francis visited Lampedusa to raise awareness of the plight of migrants.
