Reggio Calabria, July 30 - A court in the southern city of Reggio Calabria sentenced 42 people on Tuesday for 'Ndrangheta mafia ties related to contracts for the region's A3 highway. Another four were acquitted. Investigators said that work sites for the modernization the A3 were in the grip of the 'Ndrangheta Gallico-Bruzzise-Morgante and Sciglitano clans, who extorted a 3% bribe for "protection". Five life sentences were also handed down for murders during the Gallico and Bruzzise crime syndicate turf war between 1980 and 1988 that left 52 people dead. The life sentences were handed down to Domenico and Giuseppe Gallico, Lucia Giuseppa, Salvatore Morgante and Carmine Demetrio Santaiti. The other sentences range from two years to 25 years in prison.
