Prominent Italian priest 'kidnapped' in Syria

Rome, July 30 - The foreign ministry on Tuesday was working to verify reports that prominent Italian priest Paolo Dall'Oglio had been abducted in Syria by an al-Quaeda affiliate. The Jesuit, who was exiled from the war-torn country in 2012 for championing the opposition to President Bashar al-Assad, was reported kidnapped late Monday by fellow activists. Sources told Reuters members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant kidnapped Dall'Oglio while he was walking in the city of Raqqa, which had fallen under the control of militant Islamist brigades.
