Funerals held for 38 Italian bus crash victims

Pozzuoli, July 30 - Mourners filled a stadium in the small southern town of Pozzuoli Tuesday at funeral services for the 38 victims killed in a bus accident Sunday. "This is a tragedy that's cut my heart in two," said the mayor, Vincenzo Figliolia. "We must make sure their deaths are not in vane. Something didn't work, someone is responsible. We must find clarity and I'm sure we will". Police suspect the bus, which slammed into a guardrail before flying off a high viaduct when the protective barrier gave way, suffered from some kind of mechanical failure. Before crashing into the railing, the bus struck six cars travelling on the highway. The bus had been carrying a group of friends returning from a weekend excursion to the local Telese thermal baths and the popular pilgrimage destination of Pietralcina. Tuesday was declared a national day of mourning by Premier Enrico Letta, who attended services but made no comment.
