Soccer: Cassano fined for comments on gays

(ANSA) - Rome, July 20 - A disciplinary commission of European soccer's governing body UEFA on Friday fined Italy and AC Milan forward Antonio Cassano 15,000 euros for making "discriminatory" comments on gays during the recent Euro 2012 tournament. Cassano said he hoped there were no gay players in the national team after a TV presenter suggested not all players in the national team were straight. He also used the derogatory term 'froci' (faggots) to describe gay people. Cassano, who helped Italy reach the final of Euro 2012, apologised afterwards saying that "homophobia is a sentiment that does not belong to me".
