Italy marks 70 years of free press

Rome, July 26 - Italy's journalists' union FNSI on Friday celebrated 70 years of a free press since the fall of Fascism during World War II. "It wasn't by chance that when Fascism overcame the government of the country it made controlling the press among its principle objectives," said FNSI Director Giancarlo Tartaglia. He added that "a free press is a fundamental institution for a democratic State". Senate Speaker Pietro Grasso marked the occasion with a commemorative greeting.
