Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro, July 24 - Pope Francis in neither "untouchable nor dangerous" and the craze to create security should not be "exaggerated", Sao Paulo's archbishop said commenting on the pontiff's chaotic car ride from Rio de Janeiro's airport on Monday. The pope has travelled to Brazil in his first overseas visit since being elected head of the Catholic Church in March for a week-long visit for World Youth Day (WYD). "The Pope wants contact with the people," Archbishop Odilo Scherer, also a member of the local organizing committee of WYD, said. Pope Francis' vehicle was mobbed by big crowds trying to greet him as it made its way through Rio de Janeiro and security officials had trouble keeping people back so he could continue his journey.
