No dogs allowed on Sorrento beaches

Ordinance from 2002 put into action by current mayor

No dogs allowed on Sorrento beaches

Sorrento, July 22 - A city ordinance in the southern seaside town of Sorrento issued Monday forbids all dogs from visiting the beach or staying at one of the many area seafront resorts with their owners. Mayor Giuseppe Cuomo said that the regulation dates back to a former administration from 2002 and that his government was simply applying a pre-existing ordinance. Animal rights groups say that the move could worsen the already serious problem of seasonal animal abandonment. Every year thousands of pets in Italy are dumped by owners who leave for their traditional extended summer holidays.
