Pope departs for Brazil on first foreign visit

Fiumicino, July 22 - Pope Francis departed Rome for Brazil Monday on his first international trip as pontiff. The Argentine pontiff is spending a week there for World Youth Day, where he aims to encourage young people "to be witnesses of hope and makers of peace," according to a message sent to President Giorgio Napolitano. The world's first Latin American pope also left Italians with his "most fervent wishes of happiness and faith in the future". His scheduled arrival time in Rio de Janeiro is 16:00 local time after a 12 hour flight. He will return July 28.
