Trento councillor expelled for racist remarks about Kyenge

First black minister 'should return to jungle'

Trento councillor expelled for racist remarks about Kyenge

(ANSA) – Trento, July 17 - A Trento area councillor has been expelled from his political party for racist remarks about Italy's first black cabinet minister. "Go back to the jungle," Paolo Serafini, formerly of the Northern League, wrote on his Facebook page about Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge. Along with the comment, Serafini posted photos of monkeys. As a result, he was ejected from the Trentino Project, a movement he joined after leaving the Northern League. His expulsion came as a local councillor in Padua was found guilty of instigation to commit racist sex crimes against Kyenge. Dolores Valandro, formerly of the anti-immigrant Northern League, was handed a suspended sentence of 13 months in prison and was banned from public office for three years. Valandro, who called for the minister to be raped in a June 13 Facebook post, has since been expelled from the Northern League, whose members have made repeated attacks on the Congolese-born Kyenge. At a League rally over the weekend, Deputy Senate Speaker Roberto Calderoli said she looked like an orangutan, prompting calls for his resignation which he has shown no signs of heeding, though he has apologized.
