Syria: rebels enter Israeli-occupied Golan Heights

IDF patrol exchamges gunfire with Syrian rebels, loyalists

(ANSAmed) - BEIRUT, JULY 17 - Syrian insurgents fighting against President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday night entered an unmanned Israeli outpost in the Tel Fares area on the Golan Heights, Al Arabiya pan-Arab TV correspondent Ziad Halabi reported. This is the first time Syrian rebels have entered Israeli-occupied territory since the Syrian civil war began more than two years ago. Israel occupied the Golan Heights in 1967 and annexed them in 1981. An Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) patrol exchanged gunfire with Syrian rebels and loyalists after noticing suspicious activity at the outpost, Israeli website Ynet website reported. At least two Syrian rebels entered the outpost near Tel Fares on the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, just a few miles west of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) Zone, according to Al Arabiya and Ynet.
