Pope's visit to Brazil expected to boost Youth Day spirits

Brasilia, July 16 - The visit of Pope Francis to Brazil for World Youth Day will give a ''special impetus'' to the ''spirit of solidarity'' and social commitment of young people, a Church spokesman said Tuesday. According to a 2010 census, more than 30 million young Brazilians consider themselves Catholics, and the pope's visit ''will serve to give an impetus to the natural strength of the special young people in Brazil and other countries,'' said a media spokesman for the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil. According to a survey on ''Religion and Society'' by the University of Rio de Janeiro, 65.9% of youth between 15 and 24 believe that fighting poverty must be Brazil's highest priority. Second most important is dealing with violence and almost 33% said a return to faith in God should be a priority.
