Claudia Cardinale to fete Visconti restoration at Venice

Venice, July 15 - Italian 1960s bombshell Claudia Cardinale will be in attendance at this summer's Venice Film Festival to celebrate the restored version of a Luchino Visconti classic. Released as 'Sandra (Of a Thousand Delights)' in the United States and 'Of These Thousand Pleasures' in Britain, 1965's 'Vaghe Stelle dell'Orsa' starred Cardinale as a Holocaust survivor in the retelling of the incestuous Electra myth set in postwar Italy which won the event's top Golden Lion prize. A screening of the film, which was re-mastered by Sony Pictures Entertainment, will be part of the festival's 'Venezia Classici' section, now in its second year, devoted to newly restored films and documentaries. Opening the section is the 1977 'Sorcerer' by William Friedkin, winner of a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement. For the first time, the Venezia Classici jury will be composed of Italian university film students. The world's oldest film festival, now in its 70th year, runs August 28-September 7. Born in Tunis, Cardinale's work has spanned Mario Monicelli's I Soliti Ignoti (Big Deal on Madonna Street, 1958) Visconti's Rocco and His Brothers (1960) and The Leopard (1963), Federico Fellini's 8 1/2 (1963), The Pink Panther (1963), Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time in the West (1968) and Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo (1982). Cardinale, who won an honorary Golden Lion in Venice in 1983, is still going strong with the Italian film "The Silent Mountain" in post-production.
