Mayor detained in 'Ndrangheta probe

Reggio Calabria, July 12 -Italian police on Friday arrested the mayor of a Calabrian town in a probe into the Calabria-based 'Ndrangheta mafia's vote-buying and contract-rigging there and investment of dirty money in other parts of Italy. Pasquale Basile and five of his councillors were arrested on suspicion of granting 'Ndrangheta members lucrative contracts. In all, 38 people were detained in the provinces of Cosenza, Bari, Matera, Terni and Salerno. Police seized 60 million euros in assets, mainly in Lazio and Umbria. They included 22 companies, 81 properties, several shops and plots of land as well as two yachts and 33 cars including Jaguars, Bmws, Mercedes and vintage cars. Police froze 78 bank accounts and 23 insurance policies. 'Ndrangheta, Italy's richest mafia, controls the European cocaine market.
