Baseball-playing drug trafficker nabbed in Italy

Parma, July 11 - A wanted Dominican drug trafficker has been arrested in Italy where he was playing professional baseball under a false identity. Eriberto Jimenez Melo, 35, was arrested in the northern city of Parma where he played third base for the Serie A Farma Crocetta team under the false identity of Marco Cesar Da Silva Frejtas. Fleeing a 25-year cocaine-smuggling sentence in Britain since 2008, Jimenez Melo made his way to Italy with a false Portuguese passport one year ago when he caught the attention of Parma coaches with his exceptional slugging ability. In the spring managers said he left the team for what he described as family problems in Spain. In reality he stayed in Parma where police raided his home in May. News of his arrest was kept under wraps until his extradition to Britain.
