'Better treatment of newcomers needed'

Catholic weekly calls for Italian immigration reform

Rome, July 9 - It's time the Italian government eliminated the crime of illegal immigration and did more to support newcomers, the Catholic weekly Famiglia Cristiana said Tuesday. In comments published one day after Pope Francis visited the immigration centre on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, the newspaper called for "serious reform" of Italy's immigration laws: "If not now, when?". Calling the laws of illegal immigration "cruel", the newspaper says the pope has set a powerful example. "Now that the pope has explained that immigration is not an emergency but a normal (situation) the time has come to abolish the stigma," it said.
