Napolitano optimistic on electoral and institutional reforms

Milan, July 8 - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on Monday expressed optimism that the current government is prepared to achieve electoral and institutional reforms. "I know there is a problem - which will be (resolved) gradually - with the relationship between institutional and electoral reforms," Napolitano told reporters after being asked his opinion on the prospects of election reform. "There is a well-defined programme by the government, both in terms of timing and subject-matter," Napolitano said. Napolitano has long called for reforming Italy's election process, which produced a two-month-long hung parliament after an inconclusive vote in February and the subsequent left-right coalition government.
