Rome traffic police chief resigns, possible rift with mayor

Rome, July 8 - The head of Rome's traffic police has quit over a reported row with the city's recently inaugurated Mayor Ignazio Marino. It is reported that chief Carlo Buttarelli stepped down over differences with the mayor on how to handle illegal street vendors that operate in the city center. However, the 58-year-old police chief, who was appointed by former mayor Gianni Alemanno, cited personal motives in his resignation.
