Pompei authorities tighten up on unauthorized tour guides

(ANSA) – Pompeii (Naples), July 5 – Local authorities in Pompeii near Naples said on Friday that they would tighten up regulations overseeing the work activities of tour guides accompanying visitors around the world-renowned ruins in a bid not only to improve the image of the site but also to prevent illegal activities. The measures will focus on tour guides that do not have the required region of Campania licenses to operate in the area. Their presence often leads to fights with authorized tour operators, which in turn negatively impacts the image the site in the eyes of visitors. The city of Pompeii was an ancient Roman town located close to modern-day Naples. It was buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. Subsequent archeological digs in the volcanic layers have allowed uncovered unique ruins.
