More than 90% of centre-right voters want Forza Italia back

Berlusconi party should return to roots without him, poll

Rome, July 5 - Three-time premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) Party should return to its roots under the Forza Italia (Go, Italy) banner he first swept to victory under in 1994 but he should no longer lead it, a poll said Friday. Some 94% of PdL voters and 91% of centre-right supporters came out in favour of a "a return to the spirit of 1994" in a poll by the Agora agency for public broadcaster RAI. But 57% of those polled said Berlusconi was ineligible. Some 29% of the sample said he should not be barred from office while 14% didn't know. The PdL has been casting around for a replacement amid Berlusconi's legal woes including the prospect of a ban from office stemming from initial convictions for tax fraud and paying an underage prostitute for sex. But no front-runner has emerged and his daughter Marina, head of family holding company Fininvest and its Mondadori publishing group, has ruled out stepping into her father's shoes.
