Italy 6th global market for pharmaceutical consumption

Rome, July 4 - Italy is the world's sixth largest market for pharmaceutical consumption, a pharmaceutical conference in Rome revealed on Thursday. Spending on medicine in Italy rose by a third from 2005 to 2012, with Italy's National Healthcare System shouldering 75% of the increase, the conference reported. Pharmaceutical consumption accounts for 1.6% of Italy's gross domestic product (GDP). The findings emerged from a Rome conference entitled ''Consumption of pharmaceuticals in Italy from 2000 to today, between sustainability and innovation'' organised by the Italian public health and medicine research institute, Istituto Superiore di Sanita' (ISS).
