Anti-mafia cops arrest gang leaders, seize assets in Palermo

Rome, July 3 - Anti-mafia authorities launched a major operation Wednesday, cracking down on the leaders and members of the Porta Nuova organized crime gang in Palermo. Police said they laid charges related to international drug trafficking and mafia association. By midday, assets worth about three million euros were seized. Investigators say the clan extorted money from local business leaders and had also used connections in Trapani to distribute illegal drugs brought in from South America and North Africa.
