Mayor says man killed by tigers a 'preannounced tragedy'

Pinerolo (Turin), July 3 - One day after Mauro Lagiard, 72, was mauled to death by three of his nine tigers as he was feeding them inside a cage, Anna Balangelo, the mayor of San Pietro Val Lemina where the zoological park they were living in was located, said the incident was just waiting to happen. ''The transfer of the tigers was imminent'' she said, adding however that ''the owners didn't want to part with the animals''. Transferring the tigers over security concerns had been an issue for the past three years, since the zoological park where they lived was closed. The animals, who had already attacked their owner before, were supposed to be moved to zoos in Pombia and Murazzano.
