Datagate scandal widens, Italians ask U.S. for answers

Italy included in Snowden's asylum appeals

Rome, July 2 - Former US National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden has appealed for political asylum from 21 different countries including Italy, according to the Wikileaks Website Tuesday. The asylum requests were filed from the Moscow where he flew from Hong Kong after abandoning his job in Hawaii last month. Snowden's revelations about massive eavesdropping of phone and Internet records at the US spy agency launched the global Datagate scandal last month. On Monday, Italy demanded answers from the US after allegations surfaced in the media that the United States spied on the diplomatic offices of the European Union and several countries, including Italy. Allegations were partly based on Snowden's revelations of American government secret surveillance. Snowden is wanted in the United States for espionage.
