Armed Venice bandits pull off million-euro heist by boat

(updates previous) Venice, July 1 - Three bandits aboard a boat and armed with AK-47 semi-automatic rifles made off with 1.28 million euros in a heist of an armored vessel in Venice on Monday, according to police. The robbers stole two safes full of cash and left a third behind that contained coins, witnesses said. Police said the raid took place around dawn and was over in under 30 seconds. The armored boat had been in the process of delivering money to local post offices and banks. Shortly after leaving a dock near Piazzale Roma on the western side of the city, the boat was flanked by the bandits' motorboat. "Stay calm, this is a raid," said one of the robbers pointing the assault rifle, according to the three guards on board. One of the robbers then boarded the armored vessel, took the loot and passed it to his accomplices in the getaway boat which then sped away into the lagoon. Police were called and attempted pursuit but to no avail. The culprits are believed to be Italian.
