Beagles recovered from pharmaceutical labs find homes

Pisa, June 28 - Twenty-one beagles formerly used for scientific experimentation have all been rehabilitated and placed in homes, the department for veterinary science at Pisa's university said on Friday. The dogs were handed over to the veterinary staff as part of a recovery program promoted by Italy's ministry of health after they reached an agreement with pharmaceutical companies who used the animals for testing. A specially-created program of recovery and rehabilitation helps the dogs adapt to life outside of the laboratory and prepares them to integrate into their adoptive families. By the same token, adoptive families are also required to undergo training to better understand their new pet companions and how to ease their transition into their new homes.
