PD steady at top but PdL catching up in poll

Rome, June 28 - The centre-left Democratic Party (PD) was steady at the top of a weekly opinion poll of likely voters Friday but its unprecedented coalition partner, Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) Party, made up almost a point to draw 0.8% behind it. The PD scored 27.6%, the same as last week, while the PdL gained 0.9% to 26.8% in polling agency SWG's survey. The anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) stopped a nosedive due to internal squabbles and a boycott of the other parties, clawing back 1.2% to 18.1%. The PD's coalition came first in February's inconclusive general election with the PdL's alliance a close second, both on around 31% of the vote while M5S alone got 25%. Comedian Beppe Grillo's M5S refused an alliance with the PD, which was eventually forced into an unnatural alliance with its long-time centre-right foe the PdL.
