'Decree could knock 2% off jobless rate for under-30s'

Rome, June 27 - The labor minister on Thursday said a newly launched jobs package could reduce unemployment for those aged 18-29 by up to 2%. Currently 25% of the Italian workforce in that age bracket is without work. Speaking to Italian radio, Enrico Giovannini said 2% could also be shaved off the number of Italy's growing 'NEET' population, those 15-to-29-year-olds who are not in education, employment or training. According to the national statistics agency Istat, Italy has Europe's highest NEET proportion. Premier Enrico Letta's cabinet on Wednesday approved a decree featuring a 1.5-billion-euro package that includes measures that focus on people under 30, with tax breaks for firms that take on workers aged 18-29 with permanent full-time contracts. The package will affect 200,000 people, according to Giovannini.
