Ex-premier's PdL 'must decide on support'

Govt must go on despite Berlusconi's troubles, PD boss says

Brussels, June 26 - Premier Enrico Letta's coalition government must continue its work regardless of what happens with the scandal-plagued People of Freedom (PdL) party, Guglielmo Epifani said Wednesday. Epifani, secretary of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), spoke after a meeting between Letta and PdL founder and ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi. Berlusconi's conviction on Monday for abuse of office and buying sex from an under-age prostitution has threatened the already shaky left-right coalition government. Letta has been meeting leaders of all the parties involved in the coalition. Only the PdL can decide "what kind of support to give," to the government, Epifani said outside a speech in at the European Parliament in Brussels. But even any reassurances from the PdL might not amount to much, he added, at a time when Italy "needs stability of at least a couple of years".
