Italian consumer confidence picks up

Rome, June 24 - Consumer confidence in recession-hit Italy picked up considerably this month, Istat said on Monday. The national statistics agency said that its consumer-confidence index climbed to 95.7 points in June, its highest level since March 2012. In May the index was 86.4, although Istat stressed that changes regarding the poll sample used for the index and the compilation of the data may account for a part of this big difference. Consumer confidence is important because people tend to spend less if they are pessimistic about the economic climate, which makes it harder for the economy to return to growth.
