Genoa imam recalls Italian combatant killed in Syria

(see related) Genoa, June 18 - The imam of Genoa said he remembers Giuliano Delnevo, the Italian Muslim convert who was reported killed alongside extremist rebels in Syria on Tuesday. "He didn't come to pray in our center, but I remember seeing him a some of our events, because he was dressed like a sufi," Salah Hussein told ANSA, noting a long white tunic and a Qizilbash, a traditional crimson hat. Delnevo, 20, reportedly converted to Islam four years ago. Investigators say he was in touch with militants in Syria as soon as mid-2012 and joined them at the end of last year. In addition to Koranic verses, his Facebook page contained a photograph of Abdullah Yusuf Azzam, known as the 'Father of Global Jihad' who inspired Osama bin Laden to take up fundamentalist offensive jihad.
