Greenpeace says Eni drilling project off Agrigento dangerous

Rome, June 18 - A drilling project in the Strait of Sicily has been inadequately prepared and would endanger fish and migratory birds, environmental activist Greenpeace charged Tuesday. In a presentation to the environment ministry, Greenpeace said that the project proposed by energy giant Eni off the coast between Agrigento and Licata would harm the regional fishing industry. And it said that Eni hasn't conducted adequate environmental assessments or considered contingency plans in case of an accident. "Eni intends to drill to a depth of over 700 meters, about 30 kilometres off the Agrigento coast without even evaluating the effects of a possible major accident on the marine ecosystem and the area fishing activities," Greenpeace said. It would be "outrageous" if the Italian government were to approve the drilling plan, given its flaws and omissions, added Giorgia Monti, manager for the Greenpeace Sea campaign. "It's time decide to protect the real resources of the sea, its biodiversity and fish stocks, a real source of income for local communities, instead of (giving way) to the oil barons".
