No decision on Italian request to exclude stimulus spending

Sources say 'golden rule' at risk in ongoing EC debate

Brussels, June 17 - A proposal by the European Commission to exclude certain stimulus spending from deficit calculations may be at risk, sources told ANSA Monday. The commission was expected to finalize its work on the issue of developing a so-called "golden rule" before June 14, but has not yet reached a decision, sources said. Italy has been pressing its EU partners to consider excluding stimulus spending from deficit sums, as the country aims to balance the budget, reach the 3% deficit target and still spend to stimulate the recession-plagued economy.
