President says Italy can do more to stop mafia's eco-abuse

(see related) Rome, June 17 - The Italian president on Monday said the government should do more to fight the mafia's illegal waste trafficking and other lucrative abuses of the environment. "The government should devote more careful supervision so that, using the most effective means of investigation and coordination, we can ensure the maximum in the fight against environmental abuses," said Giorgio Napolitano in a statement. On Monday environmental group Legambiente released its annual report on the so-called Eco-mafia, outlining how organized-crime groups made an estimated 16.7 billion euros in environmental depredations in 2012, and what the government has done to stop them.
