Man beats ex-girlfriend, tries to force abortion in Rome

Rome, June 17 - Two men dragged a 23-year old pregnant woman into a field on the southern outskirts of Rome and beat her, apparently in a bid to force the abortion of her unborn child on Saturday. The Bulgarian woman's assailants were her 26-year old ex-partner - the father of her two children - and an 28-year-old male accomplice. The men, who are also Bulgarian, allegedly attacked the woman as a vendetta against her pregnancy by new companion. The woman was spotted and rescued by an off-duty officer of the Carabinieri police who called for back-up. The assailants allegedly laid in wait for the woman and attempted to block her path as she left a building on Saturday evening. The woman attempted to flee to a nearby supermarket to beg for help, but was overtaken by the men and taken into a field. The policeman noticed what was happening and immediately called for reinforcements. When the patrols showed up the woman's assailants attempted unsuccessfully to flee on foot, and were taken to the Regina Coeli prison. The victim escaped with minor injuries and no damage to her unborn baby.
