Soccer: Super Cup to be played in Italy, not China

Lazio angry at Juve's refusal to hold match in Beijing

Soccer: Super Cup to be played in Italy, not China

Rome, June 17 - The traditional curtain-raiser to the Italian soccer season, the Super Cup between the Serie A champions and the Italian Cup winners, will be played in Italy on August 18, the head of the League of top-flight clubs said Monday. The venue for the match has been a source of tension between Serie A champions Juventus and Cup-winners Lazio for weeks. Lazio Chairman Claudio Lotito recently threatened to sue Juve for damages over their refusal to have the match held at the Beijing National Stadium, where it has been played for three of the last four years. Playing the match in China would have been a lucrative move for the clubs and Lotito says Juve's veto means he has also had to cancel a money-spinning tour in South America. "I can say with certainty that the Super Cup will be played in Italy and it will be played on August 18," League chief Maurizio Beretta told Sky television. "The venue has not been established. I hope a solution that everyone agrees on can be found".
