23 arrested in 'Ndrangheta mafia sting in Calabria

Reggio Calabria, June 13 - Twenty-three people accused of ties to the Ascone gang of the powerful 'Ndrangheta mafia were arrested on Thursday by carabinieri paramilitary police in the southern Italian city of Reggio Calabria. The round-up follows two probes, ''All Inside'' and ''All Clean,'' which targeted the Pesce and Bellocco gangs based in the Calabrian town of Rosarno. Investigators were tipped off to the Ascone and Sabatino gangs - satellites of the Bellocco and Pesce gangs, respectively - when the two mother gangs sought to resolve a conflict between their satellite groups stemming from overlapping interests. Those arrested Thursday face charges of mafia association, narcotics and illegal arms trafficking, money-laundering, aiding fugitives and putting assets under fictitious owners.
