Rome's new chief arrives to capital offices by bicycle

Rome, June 12 - Rome's newly elected mayor rode his bicycle up the city's historic Capitoline Hill to begin his new job there Wednesday. Ignazio Marino, a surgeon and member of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), won election Monday by a healthy margin to defeat Gianni Alemanno, a former cabinet minister in the government of ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi. Marino was welcomed with applause as he locked his bike in a new rack installed for cyclists near the Michelangelo-designed Piazza del Campidoglio, the city's capital hill. He held a private meeting with Alemanno in the mayor's office, which enjoys sweeping views of the Roman Forum.
