Italian Lou Gehrig's patients protest over lack of funding

Rome, June 12 - A group of people gravely affected by Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) staged a protest in front of Italy's economy ministry on Wednesday to protest what they claim is insufficient government financial assistance for patients with various needs. Representatives from the November 16 Committee (Comitato 16 Novembre), an organization which represents Lou Gehrig patients, was received by Economy Undersecretary Pier Paolo Baretta. The November 16 Committee, together with a series of other organizations representing various disabilities, is asking for the government to earmark at least 275 million euros in funds that would allow them treatment and assistance at home. The name of the group refers to the date, November 16, 2010, when the group launched their activities, including a series of hunger strikes and demonstrations in front of the Economy Ministry, to demand better representation and more resources.
