Italian families struggling with increasing debt

Rome, June 11 - Italian families are ever more indebted during the country's longest recession in 20 years, a study by the country's central bank Bankitalia warned Tuesday. The ratio of debt to disposable income for households rose to 53.2% in 2011 from 30.8% in 2003. Debts have increased especially for families in the south from 26.7% in 2003 to 50.8% in 2011, the survey said. Home mortgages are the leading cause of indebtedness.
