Journalist missing in Syria since April phones home

Rome, June 6 - Italian journalist Domenico Quirico who has been missing in Syria since April is alive, the editor of his daily La Stampa Mario Calabresi said Thursday. "Quirico is alive and today he spoke to his wife," Calabresi tweeted. "He is still in Syria but we are hoping to see him again soon". Italy's foreign ministry confirmed that negotiations to bring Quirico back to Italy were in a "particularly delicate" phase and appealed to the media to act "with a sense of responsibility" and refrain from divulging any news from unverified sources and to maintain the necessary discretion "to bring about a "positive outcome". The 62-year-old Quirico, an experienced war reporter for the Turin-based daily La Stampa, entered Syria on April 6 to report on the country's civil war, and had not been in contact with his family or colleagues since April 9.
