Priest in southern Italy leaves Church, he's fallen in love

Avellino, June 6 - A priest in the Southern Italian city of Avellino said on Thursday that he is leaving the Church because he has fallen in love. Don Giovanni Botta, 60, ran the central parish of the Saint Rosary church in the very middle-class neighbourhood close to Corso Vittorio Emanuele. "It hasn't been easy but I intend to be honest right to the end, even if choices that go against the grain are difficult to be accepted," Botta said in a letter to the Corriere di Avellino newspaper. Botta, who is a respected scholar of the gospel, used to write an editorial every Sunday for the newspaper. The woman who he has fallen in love with is a 50-year-old from Turin, in Northern Italy, who has reportedly resided in the Avellino area for some time. (photo: archive picture of a priest)
